Five Kinds of Silence

by Shelagh Stephenson

Five Kinds of Silence had 4 performances over 21 years ago (between the 3rd of October 2001 and the 26th of July 2002) at Castle Hall Theatre and Riverside Arts Centre

Originally Written as a radio play, this stage version was first performaned at the Lyric Hammersmith on 31st May 2000. It won the 1996 Writers' Guild award for Best original Radio Play and the 1997 Sony Award for Best Original Drama.

It's the story of a family in which control has become the driving force, where everything has its place and where there are only rules, duties and punishments. It tackles the disturbing subjects of incest and abuse, subjects that are rarely met head on becuase they are not talked about. there are 'Five Kinds of Silence' - four within the family and the fifth is the world outside.

The images in the Gallery were taken from the performances at the Riverside Arts Centre in Sunbury for the 2001 Spelthorne festival.

They are low quality captures form a VHS video which was shot during the performance, but serve to give a flavour of our production.
